arborio. risotto. can’t i just use jasmine rice?
by justine
so, i’ve been hankering for risotto since last week (blame it on the little italian place in taman desa that we frequent) and the recipes i’ve dredged up online seem simple enough (since my food always comes out presentable and no one has died or purged yet).
image from tamarind and thyme.
unfortunately, jusco didn’t have any arborio rice. i discovered this after picking up all the other goddamn ingredients (oyster mushrooms, chicken stock, parmesan cheese, etc.). it’s all because we’re malaysian, isn’t it?
“excuse me, do you have arborio rice?”
“mmmm… risotto rice?”
“guai lou rice?”
“you know… mat salleh rice?”
no avail. can. not. compute. blank stares, ahoy!
there are two more hypermarkets in the vicinity – carrefour and cold storage – and i’ll drop by in a bit to see if i can have finally have some home-cooked risotto tonight. *crosses fingers*
update: july 2011. have tried long-grained rice and it tastes pretty good. guess it’s an okay substitute if you can’t find arborio.

this kind of things, u need to try cold storage.
